Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are there restrictions when choosing my domain name?

Yes. There are a number of restrictions, defined in the .lu registry and set out in .lu's domain name charter.

More about guiding principles set by the .lu registry

  • A domain name can be from 1 to 63 characters long: numbers and letters, some of which can be accented, in addition to hyphens (-).
  • It can only start or end with a letter or number.

As the domain names system does not distinguish between upper- and lower-case letters, we recommend that you use only lower case.

What is the minimum information needed to register a domain name?

In order to register and then manage a domain name, a domain name holder, an administrative contact, an invoicing contact as well as a technical contact must be provided. The same natural person or legal entity may perform some or all of these roles.

How long does a domain name registration last?

A domain name registration is defined as a subscription period ranging from one to two years, according to the selected management type.

  • With classic management, the registration will last only a year.
  • With online management, registration is possible for 1 or 2 years, at your discretion.

Can I 'reserve' a domain name?

You can register domain names without notifying the DNS servers and without publishing them in the .lu zone. These 'reserved' domain names are subject to the same terms and conditions and invoicing as 'active' domain names.

I've registered a domain name, what do I need to do to be able to use it?

To be able to use your domain name for, as an example, a website and/or email addresses, you need to configure and activate your name servers.

  • If you are using classic management, you must provide your own DNS servers.
  • If you are using online management, you can use the DNS servers offered by the Restena Foundation or update your own servers.

You can also host your own website and/or email address. As these services are not offered by the registry, you should contact other providers.

How do I know if my proposed domain name is available?

Search for your domain name (without .lu) in the domain name search on our website. The results will confirm whether the name is available or not. If it is available, you can register it by selecting the management that is best for you: classic management or online management.

If the domain name that I want to register isn't available, is there any way of still obtaining it?

A domain name can only be made available before its expiry date by its current holder. You should therefore contact them or their agents. You can find contact details in addition to a contact form specifically dedicated to the domain name via a WHOIS search in the .lu registry.

Run a WHOIS search on the .lu registry website

How long does it take for the domain name I requested to be registered?

Final registration of the domain name depends on the selected management type:

  • With classic management, requests received before 3pm on a working day (Luxembourg time) will be processed on that same day.
  • With online management, the process is carried out in real time, 24/7, after registration fees have been paid.

In some cases, it is possible that a domain name may not be registered immediately because additional checks prove necessary.

How do I know if my registration is successful?

  • With classic management, you and all the contacts allocated to the domain name will receive an email confirming that the name has been registered and specifying everyone's role.
  • With online management, the registered domain name is listed on the registration platform in the "My domain names" category.

Can I use both classic management and online management for the domain names of the same holder.

No. You, or the holder, must choose one of these two management options.

Do I have to register all of the domain names of the same holder with Restena's registry?

No. You are free to use the registry of your choice for each of your domain names. Each registry will manage holders in a completely autonomous and independent manner.

Who receives invoices and what details are provided in them?

  • With classic management, invoices are sent to the invoicing contact. It will include the reason for invoicing, the domain names, the price, the amount of applicable VAT, the payment due date (30 days), and banking information for wire transfers
  • With online management, no invoice is sent, but a renewal notice is notified by email to the account manager. The invoice will be available on the registration platform in the 'My domain names' category after the manager has paid all relevant fees. It will include the address of the invoicing contact, the reason for invoicing, the domain names, the price, the amount of applicable VAT, and an acknowledgement that the invoice has been paid.

Who pays for operations related to my domain name(s)?

  • With classic management, invoices for an operation are addressed to and are payable by the invoicing contact for the domain name. As the registry does not cross-check the purchaser, the invoice number must be provided in order to avoid any errors.
  • With online management, the my.lu account manager (rather than the invoicing contact) will make payment via their account. Thereafter, the account manager can also upload the paid invoice via their account.

What credit cards can I use to pay for my domain name(s)?

Regardless of which management system is selected, you can pay with Visa, Mastercard, or American Express directly on the my.lu website.

  • For classic management, follow the link on your invoice.
  • For online management, go to your my.lu account.

What are the payment due dates for my invoices?

  • With classic management, the invoice is issued 30 days before the name expiry date. Any invoice concerning the renewal of the domain name will be followed up with two reminders, sent on the 30th and the 60th day following the invoice date. In the event of non-payment on the 60th day, the domain name will be deactivated and any associated service (website, email, etc.) will no longer be accessible. On the 90th day, the corresponding domain name will be deleted.
  • With online management, the paid invoice will only be generated when payment for the desired operation has been made. No extension will be granted beyond the name's expiry date. However, automatic notification emails concerning future renewal are regularly sent by the registration platform within 2 months of the name's expiry date and 5 days before the expiry date in the event of no action being taken.

I didn't pay my invoice on time. What are the consequences?

  • With classic management, non-payment for a chargeable operation within the due date will result in deactivation followed by the deletion of the domain name in question.
  • With online management, all chargeable operations are due by credit card.

However, if your domain name was deleted within the past 30 days, you have the option of recovering it;

  • With classic management, a new registration request must be submitted to the registry.
  • With online management, a restoration request must be made. A restoration fee will be added to the registration fees due for the start of a new one-year registration period.

I made a mistake when registering my domain name. What can I do?

Unfortunately a registered domain name cannot be changed. We recommend that you take the following steps:

  • Register the correct domain name in the same way that you did for the wrong name.
  • Delete the unwanted domain name in order to prevent any new mistakes in the future.

How do I pay my invoices?

That depends on what management system you use.

  • With classic management, the invoicing contact responsible for the domain name may pay by credit card or wire transfer.
  • With online management, the account manager may pay with a credit card.
Activating / Deactivating your .lu

Making your domain name available or 'hidden'.

Free of charge

Activating a domain name is crucial in making a site and/or email addresses visible on the web. To do this, server names, or DNS servers, must be configured and registered to the domain name. Once the domain name is configured, it is deemed to be 'Active'.

However, choosing your domain name does not mean that you are ready or even that you want to go live. Moreover, there may be a reason to deactivate access while safeguarding ownership during the life cycle of a domain name. When this happens, the domain name is deemed to be 'inactive'.

Why should you activate a domain name?

  • You make your website and email addresses accessible on the Internet
  • You communicate via the registered domain name

Why should you not activate or deactivate a domain name?

  • You safeguard ownership of your domain name
  • You protect your domain name from third-party use
  • You safeguard your identity online
  • You prepare your Internet presence or going into 'invisible mode'.

How to benefit?

The activation or deactivation of a domain name may occur at two key moments in the life of domain name.

  • On its registration, at step 3 'Technical data' during the order process for a new domain name.
  • When changing it, under the tab 'Delegation' of the domain name available via the ‘Domain names' section.

Renewing your .lu

Renewing your .lu domain name's registration when it expires.

1 year: €28 inclusive of tax  2 years: €56 inclusive of tax

A domain name is placed back on the market at the end of each subscription period. If the domain name's holder does not want to free up their domain name, they must then renew and begin a new subscription period.

  • You ensure the continuity of the website and/or email addresses connected to your domain name

How to benefit?

Protecting your .lu with DNSSEC

Secure your domain name by implementing DNSSEC technology on each of your domain names.

Free of charge

DNSSEC technology (Domain Name System Security Extensions) is one of the most advanced technologies for protecting your domain name in .lu against, in particular, attacks to hijack domain names. This protection is implemented in the .lu root by the .lu registry, also managed by the Restena Foundation, which is therefore DNSSEC compatible.

While not required, this protection is nonetheless recommended for each domain name.

Advantages

  • You benefit from additional security against fraud risks, particularly if the information, services, and data transmitted over your domain names are sensitive.
  • You integrate your domain name into a chain of trust within the tree structure of the online naming system.
  • You guarantee the reliability of information distributed via your domain
  • You authenticate your hosted data

How to benefit?

DNSSEC technology can be implemented on a domain name at two key moments in the life of domain name.

  • On its registration, at step 3 'Technical data' during the order process for a new domain name.

  • When changing it, under the tab 'DNS zones' of the domain name available via the ‘Domain names' section.

You use your own servers

To the question ‘Do you want to configure DNSSEC records?’, answer ‘Yes’.

Enter your Delegation Signer - DS registrations within the fields ‘Delegation Signer'-DS’.

Info! If you are changing the DNSSEC signature of a domain name already in your account, keep the existing DS records for at least 48 hours before deleting them.

You want to use DNSSEC protection offered by the registrar

The signature of a domain with the DNSSEC protocol that includes the creation and renewal of cryptographic keys is automatically offered by the registrar via the Restena Foundation's master server.

I host my zone on Restena's master server

Additional information

To ensure the continuity of DNSSEC protection while changing DNS servers: submit the server information concerning names that are active at the time of creating or changing one's domain name, and ensure the co-operability of the old and the new DS records, for a period of two days.

In my online account, I would like to take over all of the domain names of the same holder but they have created different administrative contacts for each one of them. What can I do?

You can choose between two solutions:

    • The holder of the domain names can assign you to manage all of their domain names.
    • The appointed administrative contacts for each domain name can assign you individually.

    However, if your domain name was deleted within the past 30 days, you have the option of recovering it;

    • With classic management, a new registration request must be submitted to the registry.
    • With online management, a restoration request must be made. A restoration fee will be added to the registration fees due for the start of a new one-year registration period.
